Retired Judge Dies of Mesothelioma

(January 25, 2011) Former Northampton District Court judge, Alvertus Jackson Morse, died at the age of 80 at his Pelham home Sunday due to mesothelioma. In 2010, Morse was diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma. , a rare form of cancer that develops in the mesothelium, a membrane that covers and protects most of the body’s internal organs. It is almost always caused by the excessive exposure to asbestos.

Being a native of Northampton, the retired judge had lived in Pelham for more than 30 years. In 1951, Morse graduated from Amherst College and received his law degree three years later from Cornell Law School. In the same year, he was drafted by the U.S. Armed Forces and served until 1956 when he decided to practice law with this father in Northampton.

Morse was the third generation in his family to practice law in the city. In 1963, he ran for mayor to carry on the works of his grandfather, Jason Morse, who served as Northampton’s mayor. However, Morse did not win his bid for the position, and decided to continue with his legal practice. He worked in the Northampton District Court from 1973 to 1997. Less than a year after he retired, Morse was recalled to handle care and protection cases part time in Franklin County Juvenile Court until 2006.

In an interview, employees of the district court said that Morse was a remarkable judge and a hard standard to match. Meanwhile, a memorial service is scheduled on February 5 at 2:00 p.m. at Edwards Church on Main Street. He was survived by his wife, Carolyn, two sons and one daughter.
