CCNA recognition with Cisco

CCNA certification is an accreditation exam offered by Cisco. It stands for Cisco Certified Network Associate and is one of the company’s ‘Career Certification’ programs. It is arguably the toughest and most valuable of all such exams currently available for network experts.

A candidate sitting for this exam can expect to be tested thoroughly on switched networks, including their installation and configuration, and also the operational aspects and trouble-shooting techniques. Candidates should be familiar with protocols including VLAN, IP and Ethernet. Wide area network (WAN) implementation and connections are a key part of the curriculum.

Candidates can get certified with just one exam (640-802) or give it in two parts (640-822 & 640-816). It’s hard to get into technical curriculum and details about each one separately. Let’s just say that both part 1 and part 2 are about Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices.

Anyone who wants to be a certified associate will have to pass both part 1 and part 2 of the ICND exams. Exam no. 640-802 includes both and is a 90-min exam where the candidate has to answer 45 to 55 questions. The questions in this exam will be on subjects like WAN technology and establishing connections, network security, fundamentals of switching and routing, network models like OSI and TCP/IP, etc.

Those who want to play it safe can start off with ICND part-1. Passing just this one exam gets a candidate certified as an Entry Networking Technician. The candidate can upgrade this CCENT status later on to a full Associate by passing ICND part-2.

The certification is valid for three years. The computer-based exams are conducted by Pearson VUE. Exams can be scheduled online, by phone or at a testing center. The first thing to do would be to register with the Cisco Learning Network, which provides access to resources and support for test preparation.

There are two ways to make sure the effort to get Cisco certified is not in vain. First way is to join a course at a Cisco authorized training center, which will prepare the candidate for the exam. The second method is to spend some time gaining experience and working with Cisco network devices.
