How To Run Manual Auto-Static Updates On Windows Server

If you do not use dynamic IP routing protocols over WAN links in order to update the routing tables automatically, then you have to create static routes for the subnets on your network. Static routes carrying information about the subnets available across a demand-dial interface can be added either in a manual or automatic way. The automatic way is called auto-static updated. To run a manual auto-static updates on windows Server 2003 operating system, do the following actions:

Step 1: Open the Routing and Remote Access MMC.

Step 2: In the tree structure of the Routing and Remote Access MMC, click on Routing and Remote Access.

Step 3: Click on the name of your server.

Step 4: Click on IP Routing

Step 5: Click on General

Step 6: In the detail area, click with the right button of the mouse on the demand-dial interface you need to update, and then click on Update Routes.

During the execution of auto-static updates, the existing auto-static routes for the demand-dial interface are removed before the update request is sent the other router. If the requesting router did not receive any response, the removed routes will not be restored. Therefore, users on your network may not be able to connect to the subnets related to these routes.

Take into account that you should be a member of the Administrators group in order to execute the following procedure. It is suggested to right-click the Routing and Remote Access icon and then click on Run As option rather than to open a Windows session using the credentials of a member of the Administrators group.

If you opened a session with identification information of a member of the Administrators security group, you can also open the Routing and Remote Access MMC (Microsoft Management Console) by double-clicking on Routing and distant access located in the Administrative Tools folder, which you can it by clicking on Start and then click on Control panel.

The CCNA exam is not an easy exam, and I suggest you to purchase one CCNA study guide from the ones available on the market and get a video CCNA certification training to pass you exam and build up your routing and switching skills.
