Ed is a very opinionated 72-year-old who has been divorced three times. His two adult sons, Henry and Vince, are accustomed to his unsolicited and often politically incorrect rants. When Henry, a struggling writer and blogger, can no longer afford his rent, he is forced to move back in with Ed, which creates new issues in their tricky father-son relationship.
Responding to the controversy, CBS stated, “[The show] will in no way be indecent and will adhere to all CBS standards. Parents who choose to do so will find the show can be easily blocked using their V Chip.” Show star Shatner has commented on the show’s title, saying “We say spit; why can’t we say shit?” In addition, Bill Gorman from TVbytheNumbers wrote that the PTC protest was just giving the show more publicity, which he expects will boost ratings. At the July 2010 Television Critics Association press tour, Shatner further commented on the title saying, “The word ’shit’ is around us. It isn’t a terrible term. It’s a natural function. Why are we pussyfooting?”
The main plot with Ed ordering a rare baseball only to find the sport memorabilia dealer (who also dispenses medical marijuana, go figure) selling it to someone else was the premise to have him go on the warpath as he destroys store property and then tracks down the buyer. For Henry, spending the day with dad, the bonding attempts fail until the end of the show. The usual hooker jokes are tossed in and only mildly amusing.
William Shatner still carries this show; the other actors can’t do that. And this time out his Ed is such a bull in a china shop, down to barging into the lives of the family that innocently bought the baseball, it wasn’t very appealing, it was more so ugly. So “Goodson Goes Deep” was definitely a lesser episode of Bleep My Dad Says. Perhaps it’ll be funnier or at least more fun next week.
Based on the popular twitter account “Shit My Dad Says”, Bleep My Dad says is a comedy following the life of Henry Bennett as he has to deal with his family following being released from his job with especially his father being an eccentric character. Can William Shatner and the rest of the crew crank out another good episode? To find out, tune in to CBS today at 20:30 to watch Bleep My Dad Says season 1 episode 13 ‘The Better Father’.
Carl asked Henry. Clearly not everything. “I didn’t know you had a son,” he said to Ed, before asking about Root Beer, the dog Vince (Ed’s other son) and his wife. Carl turned out not to be the friend Ed thought he was either. He’d ordered a ball for Ed, but when he found out it was worth twice what Ed was going to pay, he went and sold it to someone else for even more than that.
Tonight, the long awaited release of William Shatner’s brand new TV sitcom “$#*! My Dad Says” (spoken as “Bleep My Dad Says”) is upon us all. For those who aren’t in the know, amongst The Shat’s many projects has been this new sitcom in which he plays a 72-year-old father who happens to be very outspoken. CBS describes Shatner’s character, Ed Goodson as “a forthright and opinionated dad who relishes expressing his unsolicited and often wildly politically incorrect observations to anyone within earshot.” You can read CBS’s full synopsis here.
William Shatner (hold your applause) is cast as the heavy-on-the-wisdom dad, which for those of us who enjoyed his “dramatic readings” of Sarah Palin’s tweets on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, means today is shaping up to be pretty swell. Shatner’s son will be played by Ryan Devlin of Cougar Town, someone I hope is prepared to be outshined by the Shat.
